Samsung has introduced Full HD 3D LED TV into the Kenyan market. Coming in 46” and 55” sizes, the sets will cost between Ksh180,000 ($2250) and Ksh250,000 ($3125) respectively. For the full effect of 3D technology, one will however need to have a pair of Samsung 3D active glasses. The TV sets will be sold with two pairs while additional pairs can be purchased as accessories for Ksh2,000 ($25)
According to Tony Muriithi, Manager for East and Central Africa, the product will be received well with projections to sale an average 200 units per month. “we expect these numbers to grow once 3D content providers turn their eye to the East African region,” he says. As 2D contents are still a mainstream, Samsung’s 3D TVs come with ‘2D to 3D conversion’ function to give 3D effects to 2D images. Muriithi however says the effect will not be the full 3D effect as compared to 3D content.
Samsung’s internal research shows that while there is high awareness of 3D technology, less than a third of consumers have had any experience with it. For this reason, Samsung is strengthening marketing activities in an effort to make the technology more accessible.
