Dr Bitange Ndemo, Kenya's Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information addressing the media. Looking on is Mr. Loren Bosch, Internet Solution’s Director of Sales in East Africa
Internet Solutions (IS) Kenya has set up a series of tech forums aimed at discussing technology issues with the public, government and other businesses. Speaking during the last forum held on July 14th at a Nairobi hotel, Mr. Loren Bosch, Internet Solution’s Director of Sales in East Africa noted that it would be imperative for businesses to make such considerations especially if they want to compete on a global level.
“It is vital for companies to realize that even as we celebrate the fast development of the ICT industry, there are so many considerations to be made in terms of data security and information management,” he says. The company has been at the fore front of championing for implementation of business continuity and disaster recovery processes.
During the forums, business and government representatives discuss ways in which to utilize technology to better meet client needs. Speaking at the same function, Dr Bitange Ndemo, Kenya’s Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information said that the government is keen on establishing data centers to mitigate against losses brought about by natural disasters, catastrophic events or sabotage. “We have had unfortunate incidences that have seen our steady economic growth dealt a defying blow and consequently it would take us a lot of time to recuperate, accumulating a lot of losses in the process,” he says.
In a public-private partnership (PPP)agreement, the government in collaboration with Kenya data Network (KDN) will invest US$8 million to construct what is expected to be the biggest data center in the East African region. The center is expected to provide multiple services including disaster recovery, housing of national and international exchange, and teleport facilities.
The last two forums held in March and May discussed Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) and Internet Security respectively. The next event (date to be announced) will discuss cloud computing.
