A man who identified himself as a ‘Russian diplomat’ was arrested in Nairobi Thursday with over 100 fake credit cards that he has been using to draw cash from other people’s banks accounts. He was seized while withdrawing cash at an ATM machine in Nairobi. The police could not immediately disclose his identity because the guy “was not carrying any documents” just counterfeit ATM cards.
Just before being arrested, the Russian had already withdrawn about Shs. 140 000 from several bank ATMs around Nairobi.
The counterfeit cards bore the labels of major credit card issuers including Visa and Mastercard.
Detectives from Banking Fraud Investigations Department were summoned to the scene and arrested the man.
Police are trying to find out where the foreigner has been staying with the intention of carrying out a search.
However, the man refused to answer questions directed at him by the officers.
Credit card fraud is on the increase globally, as a result of many people using the Internet and other online methods to pay for goods and services.
